Another Top Meeting

A good meeting makes things great. What makes a good meeting? Conversation, trust, and a willingness never to hold back thoughts, ideas, and brainstorming. This week was the first time, in a while, we met face to face. It feels so much better than Skyping. The physical aspect of it really brings teams together. You get a chance to remember each of us are real.

Our meetings consist of laughing, S.M.A.R.T. Goals, planning out City walks, and really learning about one another. These are people who are going to be working together and making a difference. Changing a game which continues to remain stagnate. A system of ideas which maintain a status quo. We want others to change their game and make a difference too.

There is an amazing feeling when our efforts make others change up their style. Start working as a team, and more importantly, know that we too want to help other people in this industry. What we have planned for comedy is more than just jokes, more than a scene, but an empire to see others succeed. To open doors for ourselves so we can break down walls for other entertainers who deserve a chance.

On Top of the City

New York City has become our home stomping ground. Some consider California, others Chicago and even a few more call Boston their home. To us, NYC is where we spent most of our days chillin and relaxing… okay maybe those are lyrics, but we are all New York Comedians. There is a responsibility to having that title. This is the Mecca of comedy. Or so history suggests. In the 80’s and early 90’s there were comedy clubs everywhere and now there are only the Symbols of humor staying alive.

There is such a grand history which makes running the streets of NY priceless. It’s a responsibility which we take on proudly. But comedy is the least of the system when it comes to walking down to Comic Strip Live, or to Gotham Comedy, and even relaxing at The Stand. Clubs are there for congregation. These are our churches, temples, places of worship. We might now always pray when we are there, but we are listening, learning, and building beautiful relationships.

It seems almost counterproductive to be doing what we do; being relationships, pushing our Brand, and practicing our art. But, truth is, it is getting us where we want to be. In the center of everything. It allows us to be around the people we respect the most, and the clubs which maintain the game. Be it up town, midtown, or downtown, our goal is to continue to grow among our fellow Peers and enjoy this adventure as we climb from the Top to the Bottom Pile!

Together we reach for the bottom

The process of each day begins with us. Each person involved. Either those doing nothing, or those doing everything. The process is an end result to success. Being the best of the worst for us never was about fame or fortune, but changing the systems. Changing the game for those starting out. Maybe even more so for those still in the game after ten years wishing they could get their opportunity. Whatever it is, we all have our part to play. In Top of the Bottom Pile or near us.

This community needs to stand together for something more than “who is the funniest”, but what can we do with togetherness. I know, that sounds silly now, but think about the comedians you consider friends. You love working with them, you love being around them. The truth is, you need one another. We all need one another. When everything is said and done, you have your part to play while they have their part to play. We should, however, always know we can make it better together.

Changing the game begins with doing something different than what others have been doing their whole life in entertainment. What if there was another way? What if we could break the system and find out there is more to life than just working to be the funniest person out there? I think it is important to remember successful people are always keeping it fresh, and always doing something more productive than the normal beginner. You can’t start on top till you begin at the bottom!

Comedy is Funny

The business of comedy starts with a joke. You can be a joke, tell a joke, hear a joke. What is it that makes all that funny? The humor of comedy is a mixture of all three. We can make anything happen as comedians. Top of the Bottom Pile is continuously fighting through change, understanding and the humor of the business. We are all about working together even when we’re not together. That’s one thing we have learned with Top of the Bottom Pile.

In the passing few months people have moved on, others have joined and even more so big moves have been made. The team is working hard at building our personal brands to help explode the power of the Top of the Bottom Pile brand. Some of us have radio shows on Tuesdays, others just got signed with a manager for acting, and even more so, others are getting ready for auditions for comedy clubs. The system is here to allow us all to succeed. The support system is what keeps us going.

Positive growth is an idea that no one person is bigger than the other. When your mind finds fear in being overshadow opportunity is lost. Success for one is success for all. One thing that has to maintain the fuel of Top is keeping our standards pure and purposeful. Respecting possibility in teamwork, individuality, and supporting the life of us entertainers is the goal. All the greats work together, why would doing it on your own as an unknown work differently? The best part of the bottom is the top!

Making our Way Uptown

In the world of entertainment there are some breaks. A few brands that just were in the right place at the right time and caught onto something big. For the rest of them, there is a lot of hard work and effort put forth in making success happen. Sometimes the two worlds collide. Top of the Bottom Pile has received the opportunity to audition for one of the most prominent clubs in New York City Comedy, The Comic Strip Live.

This is, with no explanation needed, a great honor. The likes of Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld and Louis C.K. have passed through those hallowed doors on 2nd Ave in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and pretty soon you will be able to add us to that list. To say we are nervous might be an understatement, but then again, no matter how long you’ve been doing what you love to do if you don’t feel a little bit of nervousness in that pit of your stomach right before, perhaps you are in the wrong business.

Aside from the obvious benefits we can reap from this audition, we are looking forward to the experience and the relationship we will make with this club along the way. Just hanging out there has become a favorite pastime of ours, and we are looking forward to the business and personal aspects of this relationship as it flourishes. What started as a seed planted will soon become as symbiotic as two brands can be. Wish us luck, and as always…

Opportunity-Careers

Collaborating with other artists is one of our favorite parts of the game. Like minded people, out for success, who are willing to work with one another to share the opportunities is one of the core principles that Top of the Bottom Pile lives by, so the constant search for those to be creative with is abundant. Top has lined up opportunities for a documentary about what we are trying to accomplish, and also be part of a book launch for Jax Miller’s “Freedom’s Child”.

It’s a great honor to be recognized amongst peers, and we are thrilled to take part in these projects. As entertainers, artists, and creators it’s almost essential to us to be using our brains and working on something, and the ability to do it along side others trying to achieve the same goals and ideas shows that a unified effort means we all can reap the rewards. This makes us want to give back where we can as well and it’s selfless people that always get the call first in our book. We’ve said it all along; we don’t have to be in competition. We can do this together.

This will only lead to stronger relationships, more art, and a bigger pie for everyone. Along with all that Top of the Bottom Pile is already involved in we know that our plate is full. That’s how we like it, and that’s how we see it being from this point on. We are only as busy as we are willing to be, and what we do one month, we have to try to duplicate at the very least the next. Stay relevant, stay humble, stay diligent and as always…

l-Just-hanging-around

Another round of Comedy Clubs this past week. The Pile loves frequenting spots as many times as we can because of all the camaraderie and new people we meet. There’s a million stories, all with something to relate to and you always come out finding a little bit of yourself in them. This past week we had the pleasure of meeting with Richie Tienken, owner of The Comic Strip Live, which has been slinging the laughter since 1975. Richie has helped comedians such as Eddie Murphy, Gilbert Godfried, and Adam Sandler get their starts and even lent a helping hand in guiding some of their careers.

After a nice sit down, Richie was nice enough to impart his wisdom from being in the business so long, and even shared a few inside stories including how Eddie Murphy almost didn’t make Saturday Night Live. This is a prime example of someone who doesn’t owe anyone a lick of time giving a few upstarting Comedians a little heart to heart, something the Pile is very big on; sharing experiences and giving back. Richie had a plethora of memories, and I hope he saw in us the excitement to hear them, as we saw the passion in which he recited them.

We can now add The Comic Strip Live to an ever growing list of places that are truly homes for Comedians. The Staff reflects true professionalism and a lot of the values that we’ve built this brand on, and there’s always a great line up of Comedians trying to give you the best experience possible. This, among numerous other things, is exactly why it is becoming a place we love to frequent.

virtual+meetings+vs.+face-to-face+meetings

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. We’ve all heard it, we’ve all been either helped or thwarted by a relationship cultivated, and it can seem frustrating at times. Take for example, someone who goes to College, puts themselves into debt, graduates only to be looked over by nepotism or the boss’ best friend. It seems unfair, but is it really? Why couldn’t you be educated and work on your relationships with people?

Here on the Pile, we not only put in our time and research, we make sure to apply what we learn to the field with the people with interact with. The practices we believe so firmly in, we institute while out and about at various spots hanging with like minded people. People who want to be successful, thrive on connection and work together toward an ultimate goal. This makes us feel fulfilled, as it gives validation to all we’ve been working so hard to learn and achieve.

So when the time comes, we know the people who can put us in the right place at the right time, and when we’re in that place, we know what to do with the opportunity offered to us. You can give a man a million dollars to improve his quality of life, but if he spends it all on sweet IROCs and 40 ounce bottles of malt liquor, he will soon regress back into disparity. We’re trying our damnedest to not be assed out once we reach the pinnacle. It’s a tough climb when you wanna bungee, and when we get to the top, we’ll let you all know just how it feels to be there and stay there. We don’t plan to jump for quite awhile.

An object in motion stays in motion and we here on the Pile are objective to not making moves. We’re out there, shaking hands and creating the opportunities instead of waiting for them to fall in our laps. There is no waiting for breaks around here, we’re out to make breaks by breaking out into the things. You can break a leg by chance, but is it a clean break or something that will linger for the rest of your life? In this case, we want the hard work and pain associated with the risk of failing. You must fail to succeed.

Your time is valuable, so if it’s not spent furthering your happiness, are you managing the clock or is it managing you? We don’t believe in counting the clock until punch out because we’re always ticking. If there’s time to lean, there’s time to clean and we remember that whenever we find ourselves in a mess. Relationships to sustain and grow, presentation to tighten up, and always learning. That’s how success stays prevalent.

There’s luck and then there’s hard work, and we choose the latter in this instance. Luck is chance, and chances are fleeting. You have this moment now guaranteed to you. And after reading that sentence, you now have this one. It’s impossible to move forward walking toward the past and sometimes you can find yourself mired in the present. The time isn’t found on a clock, the time is now. Find happy, find good enough, be proactive.
